How We Talk

Buddy is a story told by Li’l T. It is written almost exactly the way he would actually talk. But not quite. Have you ever listened to people talking and then written down exactly what they said. Try it. Then give the writing to someone else to read. Your reader will probably be very puzzled. What you have written may be boring, confusing, just plain wrong, or completely incomprehensible. Some of the reasons for this have to do with the way everybody talks. Some have to do with special dialects and languages that may not be familiar to everyone. For these reasons, when a writer creates a work in first person, the writer has to think about how to make the voice she is hearing in her head readable as well as alive and unique.
