Why Do Some Dogs Have Only Three Legs?

There are many reasons a dog might have only three legs. Sometimes a dog is born without one leg but usually a dog loses one leg through amputation. The most common reason a leg must be amputated is automobile accidents. Another frequent reason is cancer, usually of the bone.

Here is Maty, an Australian Sheperd who lost her leg because of an infection. It hasn’t slowed her down very much! She was the first three-legged dog to compete in the Skyhoundz World Canine Disc championship. One year she placed seventh out of a field of 28 dogs!
